Target Audience: This technical guide is written for automotive distributors, engineers, repair workshops, and OEM buyers sourcing replacement gas springs or custom lift supports.

A Seized Lift Support is a Safety Hazard

A gas spring failing and losing pressure (causing the trunk to fall) is common. However, a gas spring stuck open is a much rarer and potentially more frustrating issue. If you cannot physically close your hood or tailgate because the strut refuses to compress, forcing it can bend your vehicle's hinges or damage the sheet metal.

Common Causes for a Stuck Gas Spring

How to Safely Fix It

Do not attempt to cut, drill, or heat the gas spring! Gas springs contain high-pressure nitrogen gas (often exceeding 1500 PSI). Tampering with the cylinder can cause an explosive release of metal parts and oil.

The only safe solution is removal. Unclip the retaining bands on the end fittings using a flathead screwdriver and pop the strut off the ball studs. Once removed, the hood/trunk will be completely unsupported, so ensure you have a prop rod or an assistant holding the weight before you detach the seized spring. Replace it immediately with a new OEM-spec gas strut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lubricate a stuck gas spring to fix it?

No. Gas springs are self-lubricating internally. Spraying WD-40 or grease on the outside of the rod will not fix a mechanical jam or internal failure and can actually damage the rubber seals of a working strut.

Is it safe to drive with a stuck hood strut?

No. If you cannot securely latch your hood because the strut is stuck, driving is extremely dangerous as the hood could fly open at speed.
