Unlike traditional mechanical coil springs that store energy by physically compressing metal, gas springs store energy by compressing nitrogen gas inside a sealed cylinder.
The Core Components
- The Cylinder (Tube): A high-strength steel tube that houses the pressurized gas.
- The Piston Rod: The shiny metal rod that slides in and out of the cylinder.
- Nitrogen Gas: Inert nitrogen gas is pumped into the cylinder at very high pressure (often over 1500 PSI).
- Oil: A small amount of oil is kept inside to lubricate the seals and provide end-of-travel damping (the slow-down effect right before the strut reaches full extension).
- The Seal & Guide: Crucial components that keep the high-pressure gas trapped inside while allowing the rod to move freely.
The Physics of Force
The force exerted by a gas spring is determined by a simple physics equation: Force = Pressure × Area. The nitrogen gas exerts pressure against the cross-sectional area of the piston rod. When you compress the spring (by closing the trunk), the rod is pushed deeper into the cylinder, slightly reducing the internal volume and increasing the internal pressure. When you unlatch the trunk, this high pressure pushes the rod back out, effortlessly lifting the heavy door.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I refill a gas spring if it loses pressure?
Generally, no. Commercial automotive and industrial gas springs are permanently sealed at the factory. If they lose pressure, it means the internal seals have failed and the entire unit must be replaced.
Why do gas springs fail faster in winter?
Cold temperatures cause the nitrogen gas inside to contract, slightly lowering the internal pressure. Additionally, extreme cold makes the rubber seals harder and more prone to micro-leaks around the moving rod.
