Top 5 Reasons Tailgate Gas Struts Fail

Few things are more frustrating (or painful) than a heavy SUV tailgate suddenly dropping on your head. Tailgate struts are wear-and-tear items, but understanding why tailgate gas struts fail can help you maximize their lifespan and identify when it's time for an OEM replacement.

1. Micro-Scratches on the Piston Rod

The polished silver piston rod must remain perfectly smooth. If dirt, sand, or grit gets dragged across the seal, it can create microscopic scratches on the rod. Over time, the pressurized nitrogen gas slowly leaks out through these scratches.

2. Extreme Temperatures

As discussed in our engineering guides, extreme cold reduces lifting force, while extreme heat degrades the rubber seals over time. Vehicles parked outside in harsh climates will consume gas springs faster than garage-kept vehicles.

3. Age and Seal Degradation

Even if never used, the rubber O-rings and multi-lip seals will naturally dry out and lose their elasticity after 5 to 7 years. Once the seal compromises, the gas escapes, rendering the strut useless.

4. Improper Installation (Upside Down)

Gas struts contain a small amount of oil to lubricate the seal and dampen the final stroke. They must be installed so that the rod points downwards when closed. If installed upside down, the oil sits at the wrong end, causing the seal to dry out quickly and fail.

5. Physical Bending

Forcing a tailgate closed when there is an obstruction (like a piece of luggage in the hinge path) can physically bend the piston rod. Even a slight bend will destroy the seal instantly during the next stroke.
