The Physics of Nitrogen Gas
Gas springs rely on compressed nitrogen gas to exert lifting force. According to Charles's Law and Gay-Lussac's Law, the pressure of a gas changes proportionally with its absolute temperature. Therefore, it is a fundamental physical reality that temperature affects gas spring performance.
Cold Weather Performance (-20°C to 0°C)
When the temperature drops, the nitrogen gas inside the strut contracts. This reduction in internal pressure causes a temporary loss of lifting force (roughly 3-4% loss for every 10°C drop). This is why a heavy SUV tailgate might struggle to open fully or stay open during freezing winter mornings. High-quality manufacturers compensate for this by using synthetic low-temperature hydraulic oils that prevent the internal valving from freezing.
Hot Weather Performance (+30°C to +80°C)
Conversely, extreme heat causes the nitrogen gas to expand, increasing the internal pressure and the lifting force. A hood or trunk may pop open aggressively on a hot summer day in the desert. However, the real danger of heat is its effect on the rubber seals. Prolonged exposure to high engine bay temperatures can cause standard rubber seals to degrade prematurely.
