The Brains Behind the Power Trunk
If you drive a modern SUV or luxury vehicle, you likely have a button on your key fob that magically opens the trunk. The core electromechanical component making this possible is the electric tailgate actuator (also known as a power liftgate spindle or power strut). As a leading electric tailgate actuator manufacturer, Yueli Springs engineers these complex units for the global aftermarket.
Gas Strut vs Electric Actuator
From the outside, an electric actuator looks like a very thick gas strut with a wire harness coming out of it. Internally, the technologies are entirely different.
A standard gas strut is a passive component; it only pushes outward using trapped nitrogen gas. An electric actuator is an active component. It contains a miniature, high-torque electric motor and a Hall effect sensor. This motor spins a long threaded rod (a worm gear or spindle). As the motor spins, it physically drives a nut up or down the threaded rod, causing the actuator to expand or contract. This allows it to actively push the door open and actively pull the heavy door closed.
Internal Architecture & Specifications
| Component | Function inside the Actuator |
|---|---|
| DC Motor | Provides the rotational torque required to drive the spindle. |
| Spindle / Worm Gear | Translates the motor's rotational motion into linear extension and retraction. |
| Internal Coil Spring | Bears the dead weight of the tailgate, allowing the small motor to work efficiently without burning out. |
| Hall Sensor | Counts the motor revolutions and sends precise positional data to the vehicle's ECU (anti-pinch safety). |
Why Do Power Actuators Fail?
Common failure points include stripped plastic internal gears (usually caused by a user impatiently forcing the trunk closed by hand) and water intrusion destroying the Hall sensor. When replacing these units, sourcing a high-quality OEM replacement is critical, as cheap aftermarket motors will trigger ECU error codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I manually force an electric tailgate closed?
Yes, but you must do it very slowly and smoothly. Forcing it down quickly can strip the delicate internal worm gears, permanently destroying the actuator.
Are electric tailgate actuators interchangeable with standard gas struts?
No. Vehicles equipped with power liftgates have dedicated wiring harnesses, ECU modules, and anti-pinch sensors. You cannot simply install an electric actuator on a car that originally came with manual gas struts without extensive aftermarket retrofitting.
